At first they were
recruited generally from the Military services, but later were to use
civilian recruits from all walks of life, both men and women.
Candidates for initial interview were selected by a personal recommendation by SOE staff, these were friends and former associates whom they thought might prove an asset to the organization, this was how my father became involved. Others were gleaned from the civilian sources. The first interview for missions in France for Special Operations Executive, were carried out in a room at the Northumberland hotel, the only furnishings being a desk and two chair's there was no shade on the light bulb. The interviewer would then have a general conversation with the applicant, in French. If it was confirmed that his or her French was good enough for the applicant to pass off as a French national they would end the Interview and say, "we will be in touch". The applicants file would then be passed to MI5 for a security check, not always thorough as time was short. Following security clearance and this was only based on what intelligence knew at the time, the candidate would be recalled. |
