Special operations executive   Part 1

 
 


In 1938 Admiral Sir Hugh Sinclair, known by the pseudonym 'C' was in charge of Secret Intelligence Service.

In March of that year Major Lawrence D Grand was moved from the Army to MI6, then ordered to form a new section within Military Intelligence, section 'D' for demolitions.

 It formulated its own plans for clandestine and covert warfare.    Its Mission later defined by Hugh Dalton was to devise and formulate plans by which an enemy country could by any means be adversely affected.

At the time a secret department was in the process of being set up. 'EH' at Electra House as it was known, was headed by Sir Collin Campbell Stuart a media expert and former managing director of the London Times.    Its brief was to devise and plan all forms of propaganda.

In 1939 a small research department headed by Major J C F Holland, Royal Engineers was based at the War Office. Department G5 (R) Military Intelligence as it was known  then.  This was later became known as MI(r) research and was to develop standard methods of warfare.

INDEX These departments were integrated at a meeting held in the Foreign Office on the 23 March 1939 between the head of MI6(r) Major J C F Holland, Section 'D' Major L D Grand, Section EH Lord Halifax and Admiral Sir Hugh Sinclair (C).

Admiral Sir Hugh Sinclair (C) died on November 4th 1939, he was succeeded by Lt Colonel Stewart Menzies as Head of M.I.6 who later became head of Special Intelligence Service (Ultra) the bain of Special Operations Executive.

At first section 'D's offices were based at number 2 Caxton Street Westminster, just around the corner from MI6 at number 54 Broadway.
